on pizza and agency

no sooner had i sat myself down to write a cover letter did i realise that i had no idea how to write a cover letter. in desperation, i turned to joey comeau for advice. this was perhaps not the best idea.

Dear Eagle Boys,

It has come to my attention, by way of one of your newspaper ads, that you are currently seeking employees for a new store opening in Artarmon. I am currently seeking employment in the Artarmon area. Could a situation so perfect for the both of us be nothing more than coincidence? Or is this, perhaps, the work of a higher power, ineffable as it may be, pushing us mere pawns towards some grand and inscrutable goal? I have never been a believer in destiny, Eagle Boys, but if nothing else, I believe in opportunity – and the situation at hand is quite an opportunity for both of us.

My recent experience working in retail, coupled with a culinary curiosity and competence inculcated by my family, makes me an ideal candidate for a position behind the counter and/or in the kitchen. The “comprehensive ongoing training” your advertisement mentions perfectly suits my indefatigable eagerness to learn. A “strong focus on fun” mirrors my optimistic philosophy and upbeat temperament. It is almost as if I was made for this job, Eagle Boys. It is almost as if four billion years’ worth of cosmic change, of planetary movement, of geological happenstance, of random mutation and systematic selection, of social, political and economic development, has been nothing more than a prelude to this very moment: to me, writing this cover letter to you; and even beyond that, to you giving me this job.

Almost.

But as I say, I do not believe in destiny. I believe in opportunity. I hope you are like me, Eagle Boys. I hope you see this situation for what it is. I hope that you do not wait for an unpredictable force to guide your hand, but that you, isolated in philosophical agency, are the one who picks up that phone and calls me.

I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Sincerely,
Patch [REDACTED]
